A. INTRODUCTION

Penguins have always fascinated us, whether it's because of their distinctive black and white markings, the extreme habitats in which they live, or the fact that they look rather human as they waddle along the ice. Ask anyone and they can probably tell you the name of a recent penguin movie; you may have seen "March of the Penguins" or even the more recent and animated "Happy Feet" yourself. Let's face it: we love penguins!

In this Web Trek, you're going to work in pairs to use some internet websites and learn more about these creatures, such as: What kind of animal are they? Where do they live? What are the different kinds or species of penguins, and how can you tell them apart? Work with your partner on reading the information together and writing down the correct answers. You will also be conducting some classroom experiments to better understand penguins. When you're finished this penguin Web Trek, your teacher will give you a quiz to see how well you've learned about these wonderful creatures. Enjoy the fun activities at the end of the Web Trek as well!

B. PROCESS

Welcome to the world of penguins! Please proceed through the following list of sites and questions in the order given. You may visit only the online sites provided, and you will need to answer the questions at each site you visit after completing the reading. When you have finished your Web Trek, then complete both the quiz and the wordsearch. Hand in all of your papers to your teacher, and get permission to participate in the Penguin Fun activities.

Now how's that for dinner conversation?

2. Just what kind of animal is a penguin, and how many different kinds or species of penguins are there alive today that most scientists recognize? Use this site to find out.

D. PENGUIN SCIENCE

In order to learn more about penguins, you get to act like one. No, it doesn't mean you need to put on a tuxedo or move to the Antarctic. Instead you will learn how they stay warm, what special adaptations they have for their environment, and how they carry their eggs. Try each of the following science experiments with your class partner to better understand penguins. Your teacher will give you further instructions on how to proceed.

HOW DO PENGUINS STAY WARM?
