Sleeping Walnut Mouse Ornament

Materials:

Walnuts, Small hazelnuts, Nutcracker
Hot glue gun, Glue sticks, Pieces of colorful holiday fabric
Felt squares in red, white, green, Ribbons, strings, etc.
Permanent marker

Crack the walnuts carefully into two clean halves, trying to stay with the line for a clean break. Scoop out each walnut half (save the walnut meat for recipes or snacks). Loop a ribbon or cord to hang the walnut mouse ornament, and secure the ends with hot glue into the top end of the walnut. Cut out two circles for the outer ears in one color of felt, and two smaller circles for the inner ear (see white and red felt ears in image above). Glue the smaller piece onto the larger circle, then glue a portion of the ear into the top side of the walnut. Do the same with the other ear, on the opposite side. Fit in a small hazelnut to the top half of the walnut with the hazelnut point facing up. The natural lines moving away from the point of the hazelnut will look like whiskers (you can scrub the nut a bit to wear away its sheen and show the lines). When you have it positioned how you want it, then hot glue it in (please assist younger students with the hot glue gun). Now cut a piece of string, leather string, cord, or ribbon to the other end of the walnut, and hot glue it into the bottom inside so that the "tail" hangs out the bottom. Then fold a small piece of checkered or patterned fabric, and tuck it in neatly like a blanket to the bottom half of the walnut below the hazelnut. When you're satisfied, hot glue it in as well. Your walnut should be starting to look like a cute little mouse. All you need to do now is add eyes, nose, and a mouth with a permanent marker.
