No-Sew Blankets

These links are not really educational headlines, but for me, they deserve the status of serving as our headlines every once in a while, and particularly at this time of year. I can't think of a more compelling way to give of ourselves this holiday season, than to send a handmade greeting card (or a gift - consider the "no-sew" blankets at the link above, having students work in groups to create a whole class blanket to give to a sick child to take to the hospital). It's a small gesture that could mean a good deal to a child who is suffering, and to their families who are desperately trying to cope - let them know that they are not alone in this world, that they are thought of and cared for. The 2nd link above features children - and their siblings and families - who would appreciate a greeting, along with their addresses, statistics, something about them and their disease, and sometimes a web page for them. I urge you to spread holiday cheer to these deserving families. The last link provides a similar service for sick children in Britain.
