1. ON THIS DAY . . .

November 7th, 1867
It was on this day that famed scientist Madame Marie Curie was born in Warsaw, Poland. She was trained at the Sorbonne University in France in both mathematics and physics. After her husband Pierre Curie died, Marie Curie became the first woman Professor of General Physics at the Sorbonne and headed up the Physics Laboratory. Together with her husband and Becquerel, she received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903, and in 1911 she received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry.

"Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again."

- Franklin P. Jones

2. DAILY TEACHING PICK

EXPLORING THE ISLAND OF THE BLUE DOLPHINS:

Available in either English or Spanish, students will use online resources to research the village, the island, and sea life of Karana's island in Scott O'Dell's Island of the Blue Dolphins. In the map activity, students will use the worksheet to chart all the places mentioned in the novel. They will access an interactive map to learn about the Aleuts, tracing their route, and tour San Nicolas Island through a slideshow, learning about the native wildlife and physical features. Interactive quizzes guide students through the local sea life, while "Learn More" features take students to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History online, to explore Chumash legends and culture. The Teacher's Page offers a photo of what might just be the real Karana, along with a story of this person, an author's page, and Teacher Notes. A final quiz is included.
