1. ON THIS DAY . . .

November 21st, 1694
It was on this day that the French author and philosopher Voltaire was born. His real name was François Marie Arouet. Imprisoned in the Bastille for his tirade on the governing class, exiled almost 10 years later to England for again insulting the nobility or ruling class, Voltaire then wrote a treatise on superior British customs, leading him once more into exile. He studied Locke and Newton, natural sciences, and philosophy, and through shrewd dealings became quite wealthy and influential. His essays and novels spoke for social reform and religious tolerance, and he became a leading figure of the Enlightenment.
