1. ON THIS DAY . . .

November 20th, 1889
It was on this day that the astronomer and mathematician Edwin Powell Hubble was born in Marshfield, Missouri. He established Hubble's Law, a theory based on the degree of redshift of other galaxies, demonstrating their distance from our own Milky Way as well as indicating the expansion of the universe. He won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford and served in WWI before returning to University of Chicago to study for his Ph.D. in astronomy. Later he worked under George Hale, using the Hooker Telescope at Mount Wilson and proving that other galaxies existed outside of our own, while changing the whole ideas and nature of astronomy.
