1. ON THIS DAY . . .

November 19th, 1703
It was on this day that the famous Man in the Iron Mask, identity unknown, died in his prison cell at the Bastille in Paris. Much intrigue surrounded his identify, with the most popular rumor being that he was the illegitimate half brother of Louis XIV. He changed prisons several times, always with prison governor Saint-Mars. He was purportedly only seen with a black, velvet mask to hide his identify, though rumors circulated that he actually wore an iron mask. The mysterious story provided fodder not only for gossip, but became legend through the works of Alexandre Dumas and Voltaire (François-Marie Arouet).
